This guide looks at how to use the different video modes in MODRON Spaces and the benefits and purpose of each mode. If you don’t already have your own account, we invite you to try the platform totally free, and without requiring a credit card for 14 days. Sign up today.

Step 1. Start a video call

From within your account, you can start a video call at any time. First you need to have a case created. If you need help with how to create your case, check out our earlier blog post here.

From within your case you then navigate to the appropriate space for your call. For this guide we will start a call in the Everybody space so that anyone in the case can join. From within your chosen space you then click on the phone icon at the top right of the screen to start a call.

Once you click the phone icon, the Start a video call screen will open. Here you can set the agenda or reason for the call as well as change your settings for your camera and microphone by clicking on the gear icon. It’s also an opportunity to assess how your video feed will appear to others. When you are ready, click the Start call button.

Step 2. People who have access to the space can join the call

Once you start a call, the people who have access to that space can join at any time. People can also leave and re-join the call at any time while it is active.

By default, your call will start on grid view. This gives everyone on the screen the same space. It's great for when working as a group.

Step 3. Toggle between full screen mode and back

By clicking on the downward pointing arrow beneath the video feeds you can toggle full screen. You can then click the upwards facing arrow you will see when in full screen mode to go back to the normal view.

Step 4. Try speaker view

By clicking on the icon below which is located at the top right of your screen while on a call you can cycle through different video modes. The next is the speaker view.

It will automatically switch the focus of the main panel to the person who is currently speaking. This mode is good when one person is doing most of the talking and you need to give them focus.

You can also click on the thumbnail of a person on the call to lock them into focus. Once you do this the main person will not switch once someone else is talking. You can click again on the thumbnail of the person you locked into place to go back to automatically switching to the dominant speaker as the focus.

Step 5. Toggle between full screen mode and back

Just like in the grid view, you can click the downward pointing arrow beneath the video feeds you can toggle full screen. You can then click the upwards facing arrow you will see when in full screen mode to go back to the normal view.

Step 6. Try minimised view

From the speaker view, when you toggle the video mode it will change to the minimised view.

This view is useful if you are trying to do some work in the space while on a call. The minimised view will automatically show the current dominant speaker and the window containing the video feed can be dragged into any position on our screen.

This mode will also automatically be activated if you navigate away from the space that the call was started in. This allows you to access other parts of the system while still interacting with the call.

Conclusion

Clicking the toggle again should take you back to grid view.
